Watches Change – And So Do Their Straps
Let’s face it: watches are more than timekeepers. They are personal objects we carry through years of life. And just like their owners, watches evolve. One of the most debated topics in the vintage watch world is the strap or bracelet. For some collectors, finding the original bracelet is almost as important as the watch itself. For others, the strap is simply a way to make the watch more comfortable or better suited to everyday wear.
After more than 30 years of collecting watches, I’ve seen both sides of the argument. And honestly? I understand both.
Why Straps and Bracelets Get Replaced
There’s a simple reason why many vintage watches no longer have their original bracelets: time. Leather dries and cracks. Metal bracelets stretch and wear out. And sometimes owners simply wanted a different look.
Over decades a watch may pass through several owners, and each of them might choose a strap that fits their own taste. It’s completely normal to see vintage watches on:
- leather straps
- nylon straps
- aftermarket metal bracelets
- or sometimes no bracelet at all
That’s simply part of the life cycle of a watch.
The Original Bracelet – The Collector’s Perspective
For many collectors, the original bracelet is the holy grail. An original bracelet completes the watch exactly as it left the factory. It adds authenticity and often increases the overall value of the piece. In some cases, finding the correct bracelet can even be harder than finding the watch itself.
From a historical standpoint, this makes perfect sense. But personally, I’ve never obsessed over original bracelets. If I find one in good condition, that’s great. But it’s not the most important aspect of the watch for me.
Why I Prefer Leather and Nylon
While metal bracelets certainly have their place, I’ve always preferred leather and nylon straps. Leather has something metal simply cannot replicate: character. A well-worn leather strap develops its own patina over time and slowly shapes itself to your wrist. Every mark tells part of your story. Nylon straps are the opposite: simple, durable, and incredibly comfortable. They give vintage watches a relaxed, almost military-inspired feel and make them easy to wear every day.
For me, the strap is not about preserving the past perfectly. It’s about making the watch my own.
The Great Debate: Original vs Personal
So does a watch really need its original bracelet? For some collectors the answer is absolutely yes. Authenticity and historical correctness matter, and there is real satisfaction in restoring a watch exactly as it once was.
For others, the strap is simply an extension of personal style. Neither approach is wrong. That’s part of what makes watch collecting such an interesting hobby.

Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, watch straps and bracelets are a personal choice. Some collectors hunt down the exact original bracelet to complete a watch exactly as it left the factory. Others prefer to experiment with leather, nylon, or modern alternatives that better fit their lifestyle.
Both approaches are valid.
After all, a watch isn’t just a historical object. It’s something you wear, live with, and make part of your own story. So whether you restore your watch with the correct bracelet or choose a strap that simply feels right on your wrist — the most important thing is that you enjoy wearing it.
